ABSTRACT

Urban planning is not typically a profession discussed in secondary schools. Students who potentially could be intrigued by careers in the built environment are not exposed to these disciplines until adulthood. In 2013, the Neighborhood Alliance of Central Oklahoma and City of Oklahoma City staff initiated a NeighborWalk program with the University of Oklahoma to prepare learning modules for fifth graders. The three-year program within communities of color engaged students with built-environment professions, city functions and processes, and field audits of infrastructure within the neighborhood. This program helped children to broaden their career choices and learn about meaningful civic engagement.
