ABSTRACT

This chapter explores undergraduate planning students’ motivations for and perspectives on planning education and the profession based on a survey. The survey data confirms general observations like students’ late exposure to urban planning and financial barriers to postbaccalaureate education. It also identifies planning subjects that align with younger generations’ interests, students’ preference for public-sector jobs, and bachelor’s programs as the pipeline for master’s programs. Scholarships for youth, visibility in media that youth are familiar with, and recruitment events for community college and university students can support recruitment. Faculty diversity and mentorship programs are also important for students’ career development.
