ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a context for, and a brief historical overview of, urban planning in India. It establishes the need for planners, explains the role of planners in the Indian context, and discusses desirable skills for planners and planning education in India. Using Rajkot as a case study, we discuss public awareness of planning and strategies to increase it to make planning more mainstream. This chapter is based on more than 25 years of experience in planning research and practice and two interviews with expert planning practitioners with extensive experience in the Indian context.
