ABSTRACT

This chapter contributes to filling the gap in understanding diversity among accredited planning programs at historically Black colleges and universities in the United States. Diversity remains an important accreditation criterion amid declining enrollments nationwide, and HBCUs play a critical role in the diversification of planning. The chapter posits, despite longstanding concerns by many in the academic planning community, that racial diversity concerns have largely been relegated to the margins for most of planning’s history concerning the academy and pedagogy and that the US Planning Accreditation Board (PAB) should increase efforts to include diversity as an accreditation standard.
