ABSTRACT

Playbuilding, “in contrast to other forms of drama-based research, where the researcher determines the performance decisions involves the entire group of participants in the creative process”. Playbuilding is “a method of working with groups of participants to create a theatrical piece about their thoughts, opinions, and lived experiences”. The process that Mirror Theatre uses when devising a piece can generally be broken down into three phases: data generation, vignette creation, and participatory dissemination. Personal storytelling is a foundational method of data generation that Mirror Theatre utilizes in the devising process. The importance of personal experience is a critically important form of data collection in Mirror Theatre works. Development of vignettes is not a straight line. Lots of perspectives, lots of approaches.
