ABSTRACT

This chapter is structured as follows: first, the chapter opens with a detailed description of paternalistic love and presents the apparent gaps in current literature. Nava Michael Tsabari then links the specific dimensions of paternalism and love to elaborate on paternalistic management in family firms, demonstrating them with employees’ quotes. Finally, the chapter presents a conceptual framework about why paternalism is prevalent in family firms, how it affects employees, and concludes with a discussion of the implications to other types of organizations.

Then the chapter explores how the “tough love” management style associated with paternalism exemplifies what is currently known about family firms. By connecting the general literature on paternalism with anecdotal descriptions of paternalistic leadership in family firms, Table 12.1 summarizes the links between Aycan’s) five dimensions of paternalism and family firm descriptions of paternalistic leadership.
