ABSTRACT

Since Bantu languages lack articles, the size and category of their nominal expressions is unclear: are they DPs, NPs, or something in between? In this chapter, I present semantic and syntactic tests of nominal size drawn from the work of Dayal (2004, 2011a,b, 2017) and Boskovič (2005, 2008, 2012), and then apply them to Swahili. I show that Swahili patterns, not with DP-less Hindi and Serbo-Croatian, but rather with English, wherein DP is present.
