ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book evaluates the causes of current social discontent in Chile, concentrating on the dramatic improvement in living and material conditions experienced by Chileans over the last three decades. It examines three combinations of factors that are perhaps at the root of the current wave of discontent and dissatisfaction affecting an important part of Chilean society. The book explores the important divisions that have emerged in the political sphere and in key sources of legitimacy, such as the government, Parliament, the legal system and the police.
