ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses the causes of the current social unrest in Chile by focusing on the dramatic improvement in the living and material conditions experienced by Chileans in the last three decades. Since democratic restoration in 1990, Chile has successfully modernised and expanded its economy, while the living standards and the welfare levels of its entire population have become the highest in Latin America. The chapter examines a set of factors that can be at the bottom of the current wave of malaise and dissatisfaction that is affecting an important part of the Chilean society.
