ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the importance of the concept of regional resilience in explaining changes in regional labour markets. The first part of the chapter describes the main principles of the concept and then takes up its role in explaining changes in regional labour markets. It also shows how regional resilience affects the labour market, particularly its employment size and structure and the forms of employment adopted on it. I identify the factors that determine these changes and examine their positive impact on the labour market. Regional economic resilience is mainly affected by modern economic structures, diversified regional economic activities, human capital, technological advancement and innovativeness in enterprise, institutional and political quality, and the availability of financial resources. The paper also offers recommendations for entities implementing regional policies with regard to improvements in labour markets. It also points to the applications and limitations of the concept of regional resilience in explaining changes in the labour market. The chapter ends with conclusions and suggestions for new research directions.
