ABSTRACT

In 2020 the Sacrum Profanum festival—dedicated to experimental and modern classical music—entered its 18th edition. Its organisers treated the COVID-19 circumstances as an opportunity to redefine what a festival can be, opting for a completely new format of the event. The aim of this chapter is to describe the 2020 edition of the Sacrum Profanum festival as an example of a solution to deal with the extraordinary pandemic reality, where improvisation, risk taking, and a fusion of incremental and radical creativity proved successful. The analysis is based on interviews with organisers and festival sector specialists, media reviews, and audience feedback available through social media.
