ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses autonomous cultural activities in several interconnected venues on the Štvanice Island in Prague, Czechia, 2019−22. After a brief history of the island and the history of autonomous culture in Prague, the creation of the island’s cultural resistance scene is discussed. The analysis is conducted through the lens of Bey’s concept of Temporary Autonomous Zones (TAZs). Interviews with key actors reveal details of successful negotiations with the municipality as well as ideas for filling the venues with authentic culture. Data gathered from young participants are also incorporated. The strategies to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic using open-air venues are discussed.
