ABSTRACT

This article explores “sectarianism” and its impact on Deir Ez-Zor to provide an understanding of the nature of the conflict in this city. Deir ez-Zor has been an important battleground throughout the on-going Syrian civil war. The study highlights key actors within the local conflict by focusing upon its cultural (tribal), economic and political components. The article places a particular emphasis upon the complexity of this sub-conflict. The paper also observes that the city has, by virtue of its natural resources, key industries, and geopolitical/geostrategic significance, potential to make a key contribution to Syria’s post-war recovery. In concluding, it summarises both the specific and more general significance of the conflict in Deir ez-Zor.
