ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the Universal Design for Transition (UDT) framework which is an approach for blending academic and transition instruction for students with disabilities. It builds upon the principles of Universal Design for Learning (Meyer et al., 2013), by expanding to add components of effective transition education (Mazzotti et al., 2021) to design instruction and assessments. These transition components include multiple transition domains, multiple transition assessments, self-determination, and multiple resources and perspectives. This chapter provides information about how this approach can be used to meet the needs of youth on the autism spectrum by sharing examples of how this framework was used to provide an academic education that helped a young woman on the autism spectrum, Yvonne, achieve her goals for adult life.
