ABSTRACT

First responders and medical professionals play a critical role in the care of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). From routine dental or doctor’s appointments to emergency situations such as car accidents, fires, and even nonemergency situations, first responders and medical professionals should be prepared to assist and treat individuals with ASD. With the continuous rise in the prevalence of ASD (1 in 44; CDC, 2022) it is imperative for first responders and medical providers are aware of the characteristics of ASD and how to provide the best care to individuals with ASD. This chapter will explore the considerations and training needs for current first responders and medical providers.
