ABSTRACT

Learners with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) face many challenges in acquiring social communication and language skills. This chapter provides an overview of the specific challenges these individuals face, an introduction to the assessments that drive communication interventions, evidence-based practices used during instruction, guidance for interdisciplinary teaming to enhance communication, and strategies to train communicative partners. In addition, this chapter discusses the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, including the use of picture exchange systems and handheld technology to provide a means of communication for individuals with limited vocal abilities. A case study addressing concept applications, additional resources on foundational subjects, and definitions of key terms are provided.
