ABSTRACT

Ethnic community-based organizations (also called mutual assistance associations) play a critical role in supporting health access for refugee communities, particularly in the post-resettlement stage. This chapter describes the Bhutanese Community of Central Ohio and its community-based programs, case management, and peer support. The authors describe the role of peer support and community-based interventions in promoting culturally sensitive patient-centered care for ethnic minorities. This chapter describes two client families and their health outcomes. The authors highlight positive socioeconomic outcomes for secondary migrants thriving in Ohio. Themes of collaboration, bottom-up approaches to supporting health literacy, and integration processes are described.
