ABSTRACT

The historical, developmental trajectories of economics and management as disciplines were such that they became separated from human or social concerns. Within the narrow paradigms that emerged, employees came to be seen as instrumental means for achieving economic ends rather than as intrinsically worthy human beings who were ends in and of themselves. Hence, employees were denied their essential human dignity. This chapter explores the nature of employee dignity as foundational to well-being, as well as the function of CSR-related values in the protection and promotion of employee dignity and, by extension, well-being. Following an overview of key constructs including dignity, well-being, CSR, and values, consideration is given to extant conceptual research on organizational values associated with employee dignity. Subsequently, previous empirical studies on the relationship between dignity-related, CSR values and employee well-being are examined. Directions for future research are identified.
