ABSTRACT

The global information system we know today as the Internet began in 1995. Viewing wellness, wellness, health and fitness through the lens of evolutionary psychology has provided some interesting revelations. Social scientists tend to be suspicious of theories that suggest human behaviour is hard-wired and deterministic. Supernormal stimuli and our responses to them are important in understanding digital gurus and their influence. It feels good to be taken seriously, to have our views valued, our opinions listened to or to have helped someone. Many wellness, health and fitness influencers are lean, able-bodied and so reflect a rather one-dimensional ideal. Leader-follower relationships happen more quickly when individuals identify someone with competence and follow their lead. Humans, like some other animals, selectively copy higher-performing individuals.
