ABSTRACT

Regional Development is a well-established discipline within the economic and geographic sciences. This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book attempts to increase the knowledge within the field of regional development and policies in the European area, with a focus on Forgotten Spaces. It analyses new and nontypical experiences with well-defined focuses, which makes it easier for policymakers to design the appropriate mechanisms and tools for future experiences on the regional intervention. The book addresses interesting experiences in forgotten places in a developed area. It highlights the positive cases, which can be identified as well-succeeded experiences of regional change. Since the 1970s, place-based policies have increased their relevance within the framework of endogenous development theories and policies.
