ABSTRACT

The chapter will critically examine statutory legislative and training frameworks for professionals who safeguard victims of domestic abuse and their alignment with trauma and recovery models. The original study was conducted in 2019 within a local authority in South Wales (UK) and has been updated to reflect national legislative changes including the impact of COVID-19 on professional practice.

The chapter will:

Explore the theoretical knowledge of social workers in relation to domestic abuse and trauma, contrasted with personal experiences recounted by social workers and survivors of domestic abuse.

Set a theoretical context as to how domestic abuse is approached by statutory agencies and critically evaluate the adequacy of the support training and legislative frameworks.

Suggest recommendations that could ensure effective safeguarding measures for children parallel to sustaining mother and child contact.
