ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the main findings and evidential challenges in the three main areas that may be of particular interest to those working in schools, namely, reading with dogs, supporting children with difficulties in social interaction and communication, and the contribution dogs can make to children's well-being. While these are discussed separately for convenience, there is considerable overlap in outcomes for reading, social skills, and broader well-being. The chapter also discusses the limitations of research, particularly the need for more rigorous scientific research to improve the methodological quality of studies. Moreover, there is insufficient focus on the impact interventions have on the dogs themselves.
