ABSTRACT

This case study is based on the experiences of Jen VonLintel, who works as a school counsellor at a small public elementary school in Colorado. It describes her experiences as she works with her dog, Toby, in the school and the impact they have on students’ well-being. For more than a decade, Jen has worked with 19 therapy dog teams, and the chapter draws on her reflections. She suggests that there have been differences between a volunteer team and the more comprehensive model offered when the intervention is led by a member of the school staff working with their own dog. This may be due to the time the animal is in the environment, the nature of the interactions, and the number of students and staff who participate.
