ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on conceptual development for the teaching and learning of literacy in FL/L2 contexts by using Developmental Teaching. This pedagogical model entails an integration of writing and reading, its contextualization, and promoting dialectical understanding of crucial literacy concepts. The chapter begins with the definition of three key terms to understand Vygotsky’s theory: human development, dialectics and concept. Then, we describe the application of Developmental Teaching, a pedagogical model aimed at mediating learners in writing text summaries at the university level through tools and actions that foster conceptual development. We conclude with some suggestions for further research on literacy based on SCT principles.
