ABSTRACT

Rouse examines the fan fictions of Voltron: Legendary Defender. The anime has a protagonist with a prosthetic arm and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Since his dis/abilities do not drive the plot, fans took the matter into their hands. Rouse analyzes the tactics to normalize his body and to reinforce heteronormativity: some writers replicate common dis/ability tropes, others “heal” his dis/abilities through romance. Some disregard his dis/ability and trauma altogether by reimagining Shiro as an able-bodied character with no past trauma. Both tactics undermine subjugated knowledge about dis/abilities, which are functions of fan fictions.
