ABSTRACT

This chapter succinctly summarizes how medical ideas about Black people and people with dis/abilities have had detrimental effects on the medical treatment of bodies of difference. The chapter then presents how the social constructionist model brought to light the construction of bodies of difference. Despite the broader acceptance of the social constructionist model, medical professionals still hold biologically deterministic ideas. Crossley, in this chapter, argues that while it is important to continue promoting a social constructionist version of race and dis/abilities, it alone will not bring justice to those who are harmed by racism and ableism. She believes an embodiment approach will allow for a higher appreciation of the lived experience of Black people and people with dis/abilities, hence bringing justice to those whose lives were made unequal and inequitable.
