ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the need to employ new approaches for the development of the Malaysian Indian community in the field of education and society as a whole. The first part of the chapter summarises the educational and socio-economic challenges faced by the disadvantaged within the Indian community, reviewing both government and civil society initiatives. The second part consolidates the recommendations and proposed actions writers have identified for the Government; while the third part puts together proposals for Civil Society. Policies and experiences from local and international settings are referred to in order to identify workable ways minority communities from low socio-economic backgrounds have forged forward.
