ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the teaching and learning of dance and its possibilities within the primary school context are discussed. Dance has long been a key component of the Physical Education curriculum in primary schools. It considers that the nature of Dance offers unique opportunities for body learning in a simultaneous engagement of body, mind and sensibility. The art of dance is holistic and embodied as physical, cognitive, creative, aesthetic and artistic with interrelatedness and co-dependence of these multiple aspects, in process and product. Although it is a challenge to separate these elements due to the holistic nature of Dance, it is suggested in this chapter that this approach is taken in order to understand Dance correctly as a multi-faceted, embodied art form.
