ABSTRACT

Despite the media barrage of how unfit and unhealthy our young people are today, to date little importance has been placed on health and physical activity within primary Physical Education. In this chapter, this issue is considered, indicating that children’s attitudes and interests in physical development and physical activity can be fostered through understanding the importance of not only activity, but also diet, and the concept of healthy lifestyles. It is suggested that such an approach can in the long-term help increase confidence and self-esteem through regular participation, prevent mental health difficulties and improve overall quality of life.
