ABSTRACT

Regardless of the landscape for primary Physical Education at any given time, it remains important that those who value it and speak about it passionately that a vision for what it should look like can be clearly communicated. This chapter reminds us of the importance of primary Physical Education, providing a clear rationale for a high status for Physical Education in today’s primary schools. This rationale is based on the potential outcomes of a high-quality Physical Education provision within physical, social, affective and cognitive domains and is contextualised within prevailing debates. Here we are challenged to rethink the nature, content and style of the primary school Physical Education centred in a bid to move closer to clear, planned for, developmentally appropriate and individually relevant learning experiences.
