ABSTRACT

55This chapter considers how Physical Education’s relationship to primary education has changed over time. This journey covers over a century of changes, all numerous iterations of syllabi and curricula many from competing agendas. However, the commonalities found here conclude that ultimately children benefit from experiences which help them to master fundamental motor skills such as locomotor and manipulative skills and to develop dexterity and confidence in themselves. Once these foundations have been laid through play and structured activities, programmes need to be developed to encourage children to integrate skills into simple phrases and more complex sequences of movement.
