This study examines Nigerian journalists’ experience and perception of recommendation algorithms in news production process on the Opera News Hub. The study draws on the concept of role conception and role performance as an analytical framework and semi-structured interviews with 13 content creators, who were formerly traditional journalists in Lagos, Nigeria, in January 2020. The findings suggest that the recommender algorithm on Opera News Hub privileges the performance of the entertainment role while limiting the watchdog and disseminator roles. There are, therefore, indications that traditional journalists working on Opera News Hub are likely to readjust their understanding of journalism to be able to perform their roles on the Hub.
