ABSTRACT

English-medium instruction (EMI) is burgeoning in diverse courses and programmes. For example, in the case of the UK, undergraduate programmes in humanities courses may include subject matter modules which focus on linguistics in English. In this chapter, attention is drawn to EMI materials, that is, curriculum and cultural artefacts that organise learning and teaching through the medium of English. Against this background, the aim of this chapter is to examine the criteria utilised by a tutor to design and implement materials for delivering a module on linguistics through the medium of English at a bespoke EMI humanities course for a group of Omani students in a UK university. Framed in teacher research, the study draws on data collected through group discussions, a tutor journal, and document analysis of teaching artefacts. Findings show that priority is given to scaffolding subject matter learning through language skills integration and mediation supported in multimodality and asynchronous experiences.
