ABSTRACT

This chapter explores strategies and best practices for managing discussions in larger classes. These approaches promote substantive exchanges and intellectual discourse without creating an undue burden on the instructor in terms of the time invested interacting, assessing, and developing forums. The chapter shares approaches to overcome limitations imposed by structured classes, borrowed from other experienced teachers, and developed from my own lived experiences teaching courses with enrollments from 20 to 175 students. While these approaches are intended for online courses, they useful in synchronous on-campus offerings too. Current pedagogical scholarship from education researchers and history practitioners are also included to offer multiple approaches for exploration to complement ones’ individual teaching style.
