ABSTRACT

“Scaffolding” is a multi-step process in which student assignments support and progressively build on one another, culminating in the completion of a larger project, such as a research paper. Students enjoy creative latitude to work on an individual, culminating project, while building on previous assignments and experiences throughout the term. Students choose topics of interest to them within the scope of the course and complete assignments that build on one another, including the topic proposal, annotated bibliography, outlines, and successive drafts. Students participate in online discussions related to the assignment, collaborate with peers, review one another’s work, and receive ongoing feedback from the instructor. These incremental assignments help students improve their writing skills while exploring new historical content.
