ABSTRACT

This chapter provides historians with the tools they need to create inclusive and accessible online courses. The first two sections discuss the concepts of accessibility and universal design, and how they support the creation of “user-friendly” online classes. The following section discusses why history faculty are uniquely positioned to increase student success by advocating for, assessing, and addressing inclusive materials and best practices in the classroom. The last section focuses on practical ways historians can support student learning with tips and tools for making classes inclusive. By analyzing the barriers, solutions, and multiple roles the history faculty member can play in creating inclusive classes, this study takes a 360-degree approach to meeting the challenges of online education. 1
