ABSTRACT

Online course developers frequently express concerns over copyright protection, which dramatic increases in online and remote teaching have heightened. Who will own the courses they develop? Who will teach them? What will happen to their courses if they leave their current institution for a new school? Of equal importance is the fair use of the intellectual property of others in online courses. What materials may one incorporate into an online course? Film clips? Documents? Journal articles? Surveying best practices and relevant legislation, such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, this chapter addresses the interrelated issues of protecting a course developer’s copyright interests and ensuring the fair use of others’ intellectual property when developing courses.
