ABSTRACT

This contribution, drawing on the ELF-awareness perspective, aims to address the need for the modification of English language learning materials by showcasing modifications of existing listening activities in English language coursebooks used in Greece and Italy. The modifications comprise: a) modifications and/or replacement of existing inputs with other authentic and genuine material or tasks, b) design of follow-up authentic interactions, and c) inclusion of purposefully planned reflection questions, which mean to raise “language awareness, awareness of instructional practices, and awareness of learning” (Sifakis, 2019, p. 291) in an ELF-aware perspective. Pedagogic implications stemming from those modifications aim at encouraging teachers’ further reflection upon the new linguistic realities and delve into appropriate modifications of their assigned instructional materials in order to prepare learners for the out of classroom language uses.
