ABSTRACT

These are discussed in Chapter 4, concentrating on two major approaches: Varieties of capitalism and the business systems approach. We also make the first steps to analyzing institutional change. Rather like in cultural analysis, we have within the institutional camp several approaches developed to analyze how societal institutions influence organizational forms (usually) in capitalist economies. Sections 4.2 and 4.4 of this chapter discuss the features of the two main institutionalist approaches used in comparative organization and management studies and in comparative political economy: The ‘varieties of capitalism’ (VoC) and the ‘business systems’ (BSys) approach. We then show the institutional diversity in countries, to the extent that it has been researched more systematically.
