ABSTRACT

This chapter starts with Lina Kashyap opting for a career in social work and specialising in family and child welfare. It then recounts her years in the field as a foster care practitioner which enabled her to relate theory to practice and to sharpen her skills of direct work with children and their families. Her doctoral studies related to hearing-impaired children not only helped her to learn how to combine scientific quest with the warmth of human experience, but also led to her lasting involvement in work with children with disabilities. The chapter then dwells on her long innings spanning four and a half decades as a child-centred social work educator with two broad categories of children: children in general and specifically those in difficult circumstances; and children with disabilities. It describes her work related to revamping and teaching new courses, conducting training programmes, and preparing training manuals, international research, and contribution to social policy and legislation at the state and national levels. Lastly, she has penned a few emerging issues in child-centred social work which need social workers’ attention.
