ABSTRACT

The military and adult education are far more intertwined than most professionals in either discipline generally realize or care to admit. Central to both are aspects of leadership, education, and training. Most of the armed services teach leadership at every non-technical school in their educational system because the military must grow its leaders rather than seek a competitive market to hire them. The necessary learning and experience is built throughout a military career and can only be found within the military profession. This is a major part of what drives the lifelong learning aspects of military education. These massive education and training requirements create numerous career paths for civilians who have a background in adult education. Adult education is also a part of active-duty military careers as they are constantly developing people and organizations. Evidence of education and experience with adult learning theories and program planning models not only meet the criteria of some General Service careers, but make an applicant stand out and are necessary for getting through the application hurdles. Military organizations believe that human capital is the most valuable asset, and they are dedicated to developing employees to their fullest potential.
