ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how religious education has been situated in the field of adult education (AE). There are two AE frameworks that bring clarity to religious education: constructivism and lifelong learning. Lifelong learning can occur in formal or informal settings. The discussion of religious education will include various world religions, but the primary focus will be on Christian education. In the last section of the chapter, two careers in the field of religious education will be explored. Religious educators need to have the following skills: (a) knowledge of the basic principles of different religions; (b) principles of adult education; (c) administration skills; and (d) communication and technology skills. This chapter provides readers with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed to enter the field along with some of the professional associations in this field. Lastly, the impact that technology has had on religious education is examined and some suggestions for how to address the barriers will be outlined.
