ABSTRACT

Workforce education and development, like adult education, lacks one conclusive definition. Rather, it is a concept that describes a wide range of activities, policies, and programs. Workforce education and development includes a myriad of training programs dedicated to developing employees and sustaining their careers. The concept encompasses the process of obtaining the skills, knowledge, and abilities that improve an individual’s overall performance in their respective workplaces. Workforce education and development includes not only skill-based training for limited professions but also numerous training programs, apprenticeships, internships, on-the-job training, and much more. Equally important is the understanding that employees are not the sole recipients of the investment in workforce education and development. This investment has a long-lasting impact on employers and organizations, local communities, and the economy. Additionally, investment in employee development includes collaborative efforts from community organizations, private and government funding, and international opportunities. This chapter provides an overview of workforce education and development, aligns workforce education to adult learning, and prepares the reader for a career in this field.
