ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we explore two relevant social theories used in STP. First, we consider the theory of social constructivism, where knowledge is created through language-rich interactions with others. We know that providing play-based opportunities in therapeutic and non-therapeutic settings often elicits emotions, and emotions drive learning. If the STP process moves from individual model building to shared model building, the experience expands even broader and deeper. Therefore, we explore the Broaden-and-Build Theory that states positive emotions broaden our thoughts and actions (e.g., to explore and seek, to be creative, and to savour life experiences), which, in consequence, builds personal resources (e.g., psychological well being).
