ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines why working with your hands in 3-D enhances perspective by making the builder aware of previously unseen aspects. When we use material objects like LEGO®, multiple senses are engaged, and our attention is directed towards building rather than our internal dialogue. The LEGO® build allows for the discovery of new information and facilitates interactivity that leads to a shared understanding between the therapist and the client. The chapter examines the science behind the development of mental maps and how mental maps can assist and hinder us in our engagement with the world. The brain works as efficiently as possible, matching what comes in with what it already knows. Therefore, on occasions, the brain will sense something, but because it is outside its current worldview, the brain interprets and processes the information as if it matched its comfortable worldview. Using the hands to build with LEGO® circumvents the brain’s automatic process and allows the world to be viewed afresh.
