ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 explores the neuroscience of play and starts with a more detailed discussion of two critical neural networks, The Default Mode Network (DMN) and the Task Positive Network (TPN). The DMN and the TPN are presented as underpinning the authors’ understanding of how Seriously Therapeutic Play (STP) assists participants in developing new worldviews. A preliminary discussion is undertaken on the definition of play and the link between DMN, TPN, and play is outlined. Play is examined here in the context of how it might be linked with its neuroscience underpinnings, tracing how five key elements of play – joy, meaning, active engagement, and the ability to develop alternative perspectives and build social interaction – can facilitate playful learning.
