ABSTRACT

Humans do not exist in a vacuum; rather, we grow socially, emotionally, ethically, physically, intellectually, and expressively within networks of relationships. We believe there is a strong interdependence between our physical and mental health, and both are influenced by social relationships that, in turn, can influence our behavioural choices. Borrowing from the Ecological Model of Bronfenbrenner in this chapter, we will explore the interdependence and social complexities of our physical and mental health and why social engagement in play-based experiences matters to our overall well being. At the granular group level, we will look at how Seriously Therapeutic Play with LEGO® (STP) creates a dynamic multiplying effect between the facilitator’s relationship with the group and the group members with one another. We explore questions such as: How do building and sharing stories with others help make social connections? Why do we see accelerated group cohesion during STP? Why do these groups dive quite quickly into emotional expression? The answers may lie in the social side of health.
