ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates how the therapist creates an optimum environment for the child to self-express and develop self-control. Additionally, this chapter illustrates how structuring and limits set with empathy in CCPT allow for more freedom of expression in play therapy, rather than less. When a therapist is skilled in structuring and limit setting, they are better able to feel secure and maintain consistent acceptance and unconditional positive regard for the child. When a child feels this safety, the child can then experience self-expression in play to the fullest—with all the feelings and behaviors involved—without fear of criticism or need for repression. By reading and doing practice exercises in this chapter the reader will be able to:

Illustrate how limits in CCPT assure safety for the child, therapist, and playroom equipment, promote the child’s development of self-responsibility and emotional regulation, and support therapists’ congruence.

Explain what is implied within the simple opening statement of CCPT about the structure of CCPT, including the meanings of what is said and not said.

Demonstrate the “empathy sandwich” of CCPT, and explain why therapist self-awareness and ability to attend, listen, and convey empathy are vital.

Explain the benefits (flexibility, emotional regulation, self-efficacy, and empowerment) that result from allowing the child to come up with alternative behaviors vs. targeting alternative behaviors for the child after a limit is set.
