ABSTRACT

In this chapter the authors address aspects of human nature and child development that give power to therapeutic possibilities—especially in the child-centered approach—and make it possible to help children overcome seemingly impossible difficulties. These power-giving aspects of child development include the drive to self-actualize, learn, and master one’s environment; the drive to form relationships, to be known, to share experience; the drive to autonomy and self-responsibility; and, when given the opportunity, the drive and willingness in each individual child to find his own “voice” or own best modes to self-express for self-learning.
