ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the preparations that a therapist needs to consider in developing the space and appropriate toys to provide play therapy. The range of children that CCPT is appropriate for, and the basics of gaining coworker, parental, and teacher support is introduced; however, the main purpose for this chapter is to consider the physical preparation of your space and environment including selection of toys, playroom setup, ideal settings and reasonable compromises, and the fit of CCPT within agency, school, and private practice settings. By reading and working through the chapter exercises, the reader will be better able to:

Select appropriate toys and supplies to set up a playroom (or modify your playroom) in a school, agency, or private practice setting.

Select appropriate toys and supplies for a traveling play kit.

Understand what to do (and what not to do) to accommodate for older children (10–12 years) in CCPT.

Explain the significance of the saying,” You’re the best toy in the playroom,” and how development and experience in CCPT helps all play therapists better accommodate and be adaptable in providing CCPT in a wide variety of settings.
